Coloured or bleached hair in KL: why it breaks and looks thinner, and what helps

By Dr. M Hair Care · 22 October 2026 · 4 min read

Colour and bleach make hair more fragile. Gentle washing, cooler drying and a leave-on scalp step help reduce hair fall from breakage.

Bleach and permanent colour open up the hair’s outer layer, so coloured hair is more fragile than virgin hair. In Klang Valley humidity it also frizzes and tangles more, and every tangle is a chance to snap. That is why highlighted or lightened hair can start to look thin at the ends and around the face. Gentle washing, careful detangling, lower heat and a nourishing leave-on step all help it feel stronger.

Signs your colour is causing breakage

Short, frizzy pieces sticking up along the parting, ends that look see-through, and a brush full of snapped strands of different lengths. These usually appear a few weeks after a lightening session, especially when salon visits are close together.

Care between salon visits

Space out lightening appointments and ask your stylist about the condition of your lengths. At home, wash with Hokkaido Kelp Shampoo, which is formulated without mineral oil, silicone and parabens, and rinse with lukewarm rather than hot water. Press-dry, comb from the ends and use the Scalp Tonic on the scalp after each wash; its hydrolyzed keratin peptides help hair feel stronger from root to tip.
